How we compute this

  1. Engagement rate = (average likes + average comments) ÷ followers × 100. On YouTube, average views replace followers as the denominator when provided, because the YouTube benchmarks are view-based.
  2. Your follower count sets the tier: nano (under 10K), micro (10K-100K), macro (100K-1M), celebrity (1M+). Each platform + tier pair has its own 2026 benchmark band.
  3. The 0-100 hype score maps your rate onto that band: the suspicious floor scores 25, the tier average band scores 45-60, the healthy minimum scores 60, the top-decile threshold scores 85, and twice that threshold caps the score at 100.
ⓘ Benchmarks are 2026 European market reference ranges synthesised from publicly-disclosed creator rate cards and industry reports (HypeAuditor, Modash, Klear, Influencer Marketing Hub, SociaVault, Statista). The hype score is a benchmark-relative reading of engagement, not a measure of content quality or audience fit: treat it as one input in a hiring or pricing decision, not the decision itself. Nothing you enter is stored or sent anywhere; the math runs in your browser.
En bref

A hype calculator converts a creator's public engagement numbers into a single 0-100 hype score. The Collabios formula: engagement rate = (average likes + average comments) ÷ followers × 100 (÷ average views on YouTube), mapped onto 2026 per-tier benchmarks. On Instagram the healthy floors are 5% for nano creators (1K-10K followers), 3% for micro (10K-100K), 1.5% for macro (100K-1M) and 0.8% for celebrity (1M+); TikTok thresholds run higher because the For You feed reaches non-followers.

Scores read in four bands: Under the radar (below the tier average), Solid (average band), Hot (above the healthy minimum) and Viral (top decile for the tier and platform). A rate beneath the suspicious floor triggers a fake-follower caution, following the audit heuristics documented by Modash and HypeAuditor. Brands use the score to rank a shortlist before hiring; creators use it to benchmark their own profile and time rate-card refreshes. Unlike a social media value calculator, the hype score measures audience heat rather than money: for the paid-media-equivalent value of the same engagement, pair it with the Collabios earned media value calculator, and for pricing, the influencer rate calculator. Free, no signup, computed client-side on collabios.com.

How to calculate a hype score for any creator

Four steps used by brand teams vetting a shortlist and by creators benchmarking their own profile.

  1. Pick the platform

Instagram, TikTok or YouTube. Each platform has its own 2026 benchmark thresholds, so the same engagement rate can score differently across platforms.

  2. Enter the follower or subscriber count

The number on the public profile today. It sets the tier (nano under 10K, micro 10K-100K, macro 100K-1M, celebrity 1M+), and the tier sets the benchmark band the score is measured against.

  3. Enter average likes and comments per post

Average the last 10-12 posts, skipping giveaways and paid-boosted posts (both inflate the average). On TikTok and YouTube you can also add average views: informational on TikTok, and the score denominator on YouTube.

  4. Read the hype score, band and engagement rate

You get the 0-100 score, one of four bands (Under the radar, Solid, Hot, Viral), the raw engagement rate, and the benchmark thresholds used, so the result is fully reproducible. A rate below the suspicious floor adds a fake-follower caution.

What the hype score measures (and what it deliberately doesn't)

The hype calculator answers one narrow question well: how hot is this creator's engagement relative to accounts of the same size on the same platform? It does not measure content quality, audience-brand fit, or monetary value. Keeping the score narrow is what makes it useful: the inputs are three numbers anyone can read off a public profile, the benchmark thresholds are published on this page, and the mapping from engagement rate to score is stated step by step, so a brand and a creator looking at the same profile will always get the same number.

How the 0-100 hype score is computed

The score is a benchmark-relative reading of engagement rate. First the calculator computes the rate: (average likes + average comments) ÷ followers × 100 on Instagram and TikTok, and ÷ average views on YouTube (view-based measurement is the standard for evergreen video content, where subscriber counts understate actual reach). Second, the follower count sets the tier: nano, micro, macro or celebrity. Third, the rate is mapped onto the 2026 benchmark band for that platform + tier pair: a rate at the suspicious floor scores 25, the average band spans 45-60, the healthy minimum scores 60, the top-decile threshold scores 85, and twice that threshold caps the score at 100. The thresholds are the same ones behind the Collabios engagement rate calculator, synthesised from HypeAuditor, Modash, Klear, Influencer Marketing Hub, SociaVault and Statista benchmark publications. No proprietary weighting, no black box.

For brands: reading a creator's hype score before hiring

The score's brand-side job is shortlist triage. When you have 10-15 candidate creators for a campaign, running each one through the hype calculator takes about a minute per profile and sorts the list into three piles. Viral and Hot profiles have audiences that actually interact, which is the single best predictor that a sponsored post will get seen rather than scrolled past. Solid profiles are dependable baseline picks at the right price. Under the radar profiles need a follow-up question before any booking: a low score can mean audience drift, a content-niche pivot, or, when the rate sits under the suspicious floor, purchased followers. The one thing the score cannot tell you is fit: a Viral pet-content creator is still the wrong hire for a B2B software campaign. Score first, then check that the audience is your buyer.

For creators: benchmarking your own hype score

Creator-side, the score does two jobs. First, negotiation evidence: a Hot or Viral band is a benchmark-backed line for rate conversations ("my engagement is above the healthy minimum for my tier" is more persuasive than a raw percentage, because it carries its own context). Second, tier-crossing awareness: the benchmark band changes when you cross 10K, 100K or 1M followers, and a rate that scored Hot at 9K followers can score Solid at 11K against the stricter micro band. That is not a decline in performance, it is a change of comparison group, and knowing it before a brand points it out keeps the negotiation on your terms. Re-run the score monthly with your trailing 10-12 post averages, and treat a falling score at constant followers as an early signal to look at your posting cadence or content mix.

Hype score vs social media value: which calculator answers which question

People searching for a social media value calculator or an influencer calculator are usually asking one of three different questions, and each one has its own free Collabios tool. If the question is "how hot is this audience?", that is this hype calculator: a 0-100 benchmark-relative reading of engagement. If the question is "what is this engagement worth in money?", that is the earned media value calculator, which translates organic engagement into the paid-media-equivalent value that campaign reports are built on. If the question is "what should this creator charge (or be paid)?", that is the influencer rate calculator, which turns platform, tier and content type into a fair price band. The three run in sequence in a typical hiring workflow: hype score to triage the shortlist, rate calculator to budget the booking, EMV calculator to report the outcome. All three are free, need no signup, and use published benchmark data rather than proprietary scoring, so both sides of a negotiation can verify the numbers.

FAQ

What is a hype calculator?

A hype calculator is a free tool that converts a creator's public engagement numbers (followers, average likes, average comments) into a single 0-100 hype score. The score expresses how active the creator's audience is relative to 2026 benchmarks for accounts of the same size on the same platform. Brands use it to sanity-check a creator's engagement before hiring; creators use it to benchmark their own profile and to bring benchmark-backed evidence into rate negotiations.

How is the hype score calculated?

In three transparent steps. (1) Engagement rate = (average likes + average comments) ÷ followers × 100, with average views as the denominator on YouTube. (2) The follower count sets the tier: nano (under 10K), micro (10K-100K), macro (100K-1M), celebrity (1M+). (3) The rate is mapped onto the 2026 benchmark band for that platform + tier: the suspicious floor scores 25, the average band spans 45-60, the healthy minimum scores 60, the top-decile threshold scores 85, and twice that threshold caps the score at 100. Every threshold is shown on the result card, so the score is fully reproducible.

What counts as a Viral hype score on Instagram vs TikTok?

Viral means the engagement rate is at or above the top-decile threshold for the tier. On Instagram that threshold is 8% for nano accounts, 5% for micro, 3% for macro and 2% for celebrity accounts. TikTok thresholds run higher (12% nano, 9% micro, 8% macro, 5% celebrity) because the For You feed pushes content to non-followers, which lifts follower-based engagement rates across the platform. The same creator numbers can therefore score Viral on Instagram and only Hot on TikTok, and that is the benchmarks working as intended.

How should brands use the hype calculator before hiring a creator?

As the first pass on a shortlist, before outreach. Enter each candidate's public numbers, then sort: prioritise Hot and Viral profiles, price Solid profiles as dependable baseline picks, and ask a follow-up question on every Under the radar profile before booking. Treat a suspicious-floor caution as a hard checkpoint: it is the classic statistical signal of purchased followers, and it is worth a proper follower-quality audit (Modash and HypeAuditor both document the methodology) before any money moves. Then check fit separately: a high hype score with the wrong audience still converts poorly.

How can creators raise their hype score?

The score moves with the engagement rate, so it responds to anything that raises interactions per follower: posting formats your audience actually comments on, replying to comments in the first hour, trimming content themes that consistently underperform, and letting inactive follower count growth slow rather than chasing it (followers who never interact dilute the rate). It also pays to know your tier boundaries: crossing 10K or 100K followers moves you into a stricter benchmark band, so time rate-card conversations to your strongest score within the current tier.

Is a high hype score the same as high social media value?

No, and the difference matters in negotiations. The hype score measures audience heat: how actively people interact relative to account size. Social media value, what a social media value calculator or influencer calculator estimates, is a monetary quantity: what the same engagement would cost to buy as paid media, or what the creator should charge. A nano creator can hold a Viral hype score and still command a modest fee because the absolute reach is small. Use the hype score to judge audience quality, the Collabios earned media value calculator to put money on the engagement, and the influencer rate calculator to price the collaboration.

Why does the calculator flag some results as suspicious?

When the engagement rate falls below the suspicious floor for the tier (for example under 1% for an Instagram nano account, or under 0.8% for micro), the calculator shows a caution. Engagement that far below the tier norm is the most reliable single statistical signal of inflated follower counts, bought followers, or a dormant audience, per the fake-follower audit heuristics published by Modash and HypeAuditor. It is a prompt to investigate, not a verdict: some legitimate accounts (announcement-style pages, dormant-then-relaunched profiles) also score low. Brands should ask for the creator's native analytics before booking; creators with a genuine audience can usually clear the question with a single screenshot.

Do I need to connect my account or sign up to use the hype calculator?

No. The hype calculator needs no login, no OAuth connection to Instagram, TikTok or YouTube, and no email. You type in three or four numbers from a public profile and the math runs entirely in your browser: nothing you enter is stored or sent to a server. That also means it works on any creator profile you can see, not just your own, which is what makes it usable for brand-side shortlist triage.
